In 2000, leading representatives of professional societies and professional associations of both subjects signed a consensus paper, which established the survival of the two subjects trauma surgery and orthopedics for Austria. Despite many similarities between the two subjects, the proponents feared an unacceptable loss of quality in patient care, which can not justify a merger for economic reasons. The injuries are increasing as well as the damage to the musculoskeletal system. Approximately 800,000 annual accidents in Austria cause more than 8 million sick days a year and cause an annual overall economic loss of about 14 billion euros (Source: Ehlass Austria, Annual Report 2000). Almost as high are the damage caused by diseases on the musculoskeletal system. Through a specific treatment, we thus contribute the most cost-effective to the cost reduction in the health sector.
