Call for papers

The Department of Linguistics at the University of California, Los Angeles is pleased to invite abstracts for submission to the 36th West Coast Conference on Formal Linguistics to be held April 20-22, 2018.

Abstracts are invited for 20 minute talks and posters on all aspects of theoretical linguistics, including findings from language acquisition, psycholinguistic, and neurolinguistic research with formal implications. We especially invite abstracts related to our two special sessions: “tone” and “understanding islands” detailed below.

Abstract submission deadline: 12/10/2017 at 11:59pm PST

Notification of Acceptance: Early February

Special Sessions:

WCCFL36 will include a special session on tone. We welcome submissions on all aspects of tone in language, including its phonetics, phonology, typology, acquisition, and processing.

Understanding Islandhood

WCCFL36 will include a special session on “Understanding Islandhood” We encourage submissions from various methodologies, perspectives, and traditions (i.e. experimental, computational, fieldwork, etc) that are nonetheless theoretically focused, addressing questions such as (but  not limited to):

  • Is there a unified class of “island effects”?
  • What sort of structure-building and interpretative mechanisms would naturally give rise to a system exhibiting island effects?
  • To what extent are islands dissociated from constraints on “smaller domain” phenomena (e.g. case, A-movement, agreement)?
  • Are island constraints principles of UG? does variation follow from independent syntactic differences among languages, or from variation in the constraints themselves.

Abstracts are not to exceed two pages of letter-sized (8.5″x 11″) paper, including data and references, with 1″ margins on all sides, set in a font no smaller than 11 points. The abstract should have a clear title, but should not identify the author(s). The abstract must be submitted electronically in PDF format, using the EasyChair submission system at the link below. You will see fields for your title and abstract as well as an upload button. Please enter the title in the appropriate box, and a one or two sentence summary in the Abstract text field. This, along with the keywords, will be used to help assign reviewers. If you would like your abstract to be considered for either of the special sessions please indicate this in your submission.

Submissions are limited to one individual and one joint abstract per author, or two joint abstracts per author.
